Material Girl - Altered Frame (Magnetic Board)

There is also a GDT and DT call at Re-Cycle, Re-Purpose & Re-Invent.  There is more information on the website.

Hello my Dear Sweet Friends -

I am so incredibly excited to share this project with you today.  I had so much fun creating this altered picture frame.  I created this project for CS Designs for the current challenge called: "Material Girl" at Re-Cycle, Re-Purpose & Re-Invent.

The irony is the more I kept working on it the more ideas I kept having.  Which I have discovered can be a good thing and not such a good thing.  From the beginning I wanted to use fabric as part of my design which I will share more about a little further down this post.  What I have just realized is that I didn't take a photo of the frame that I have altered for this project. (My bad).  It was a 12" x 12" frame I found at a thrift store several months ago.  I also wanted to use fabric (material girl - hint hint) instead of coloring in most of the digital designs from CS Designs.  I love every one of them.

To reinforce the fabric I used cardstock as the backing. And this also means I did a lot of paper piecing.  There was so much cutting I was getting cramps in my right hand (but its back to normal now).  The quote and the rulers are cardstock - everything else is fabric.  And its fabric I have been holding on to for quite a while and I wanted a Shabby Chic sort of feel to the whole piece. The stretch lace I won during a blog challenge and just love it.

All the buttons shown are from a huge vintage find at an Estate Sale.

The flowers I had used on a prior project that was destroyed by my friends dog however the flowers you see are the ones I managed to salvage.

You can see I also added two paper doily hearts that I was lucky enough to find at another estate sale.  I know they aren't vintage but it was fun finding them anyway.  I added lace around the border of the frame to make it look more like looking through a window into a sewing room.

I also took three old vintage buttons to make the magnets but you guessed it - I forgot to take photos of those but will add them to my blog post.  My biggest challenge was getting some decent photos - the weather has been horrible as well as the lighting.  I  think it's time to get my portable light box created so I can shoot photos inside (I really like using natural light).

I hope you are inspired by the design teams projects to enter the challenge this week and it is Anything Goes - as long as you recycle something.  I also hope you will visit their blogs.  I can't wait to see what you have created.   Here's the link to the challenge blog:

Update:

I have also decided I am just going to use this as a decorative piece in my craft room rather than a magnetic board when Mark and I get our own place.

I am entering this into the following challenges:
